20 Years Ago: Unplugged in New York

Nirvana’s Unplugged in New York premiered on MTV this day twenty years ago. A milestone is the music session genre, this was shot just months before Cobain committed suicide at his home in Seattle. At times in the show, he seems troubled; at others, he seems relaxed and like he’s just having fun with bandmates Grohl and Novoselic.

Nirvana were undoubtedly the most important band in the world at the time, and had turned both mainstream and underground music on their head. They seemed conscious to stay clear of knocking out ‘the hits’ for Unplugged in New York, and instead treated the audience to fan favourites and even some covers such as Lead Belly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night? and Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World. Enjoy these highlights I’ve posted but really, you should just go buy it and embrace it from beginning to end.
